Weekly insights on leader development, succession and future planning, and the real work of becoming a trusted Talent leader in your organization.
I'm Michelle Baker, an award-winning Chief People Officer and Talent Development/HR practitioner with more than 25 years of experience building leaders, teams, and talent strategy inside real organizations.
I've spent my career in the trenches - designing leadership programs, running succession reviews, facilitating content, coaching new and longtime managers, advising executives, and trying...like many of us...to make talent strategies actually stick and create an impact. In these trenches, I've built a wonderful career.
Over the years, I've learned something simple, yet powerful:
Talent strategy doesn't fail because we lack ideas.
It fails because we don't turn those ideas into action...and outcomes.
That belief is the foundation of Compendium Talent.
Why "Compendium"?
A word-nerd to the core, I've been fascinated by the word compendium. Its definition rings true for developing leaders in today's world:
It means focusing on what truly matters - the essentials, the practical steps, the real work.
That's exactly what this platform is about.
Compendium Talent exists to cut through the over-engineered, ineffective, outdated programs and frameworks and focus on what works in practice, not just what looks good on a slide.
Concise, but detailed.
Here, you'll find:
Whether you're building a leadership bench, redesigning your talent strategy, or growing into a senior HR role, the goal is the same: turn intention into execution.
My Point of View
My POV is shaped by experience, not theory alone. I believe that:
Talent is a system, not a silo.
Succession, leader development, performance, coaching, and workforce strategy must work together, not compete for attention.
Readiness matters more than replacement.
Succession is not about names in boxes; it's about capability, risk reduction, and future readiness. A succession plan is worthless if it isn't put into action.
Development happens in the flow of work.
Workshops alone don't build leaders. Practice does.
Leaders are the linchpin.
When leaders are equipped to coach, nurture, and develop talent, everything improves.
HR and Talent leaders need development, too.
Your career path and development is a priority. If you are an aspiring HR/Talent Development leader, it's never been more important to identify how your strengths, skills, and capabilities align with your goals.
Compendium Talent is where these beliefs show up as tools, systems, and playbooks - not just ideas.
